010 로렌체티의 프레스코화는 무엇보다도 우선 통치자가 가져야만 하는 자질과 가져서는 안 되는 자질을 대표하는 인물들을 통해 좋은 정부와 나쁜 정부의 본성을 각각 묘사하고, 다음으로 보통사람들의 삶에 대해 두 종류의 정부가 미치는 영향을 보여준다.
001 and what Lorenzetti's frescos do is first of all to depict the nature of good and bad government respectively by means of figures who represent the qualities that rulers ought and ought not to have, and then to show the effects of the two kinds of government on the lives of ordinary people. 

인물을 통해서 정부를 묘사한다는 지점에서 플라톤의 《국가》를 떠올리면, 《국가》는 한 나라에 대해서 탐구를 하게 하고, 한 사람에 대해서 탐구한다. 《국가》는 이것과는 반대다. 처음에 한 사람에 있어서 올바름이 무엇인지를 토론할 때 소크라테스는 한 사람은 규모가 작으니까 규모가 큰 한 나라에서의 올바름을 살펴보고 그것을 한 사람에게 적용시켜보겠다고 한다. 정확하게 말하면 플라톤의 대화편을 있는 그대로 읽어보면 하나 나라의 올바름을 탐색하는 것이 목표가 아니라 한 사람의 올바름을 탐색하는 것이 목표이다. 로렌체티는 "대표하는 인물들을 통해 좋은 정부와 나쁜 정부의 본성을 각각 묘사"한다. 통치자가 어떤 quality를 가지고 있느냐에 따라서 정부의 nature가 규정되고 그에 따라서 ordinary people의 삶에 미치는 것이다.

011 좋은 정부의 경우에 우리는 용기, 정의, 너그러움, 평화, 사려, 절제와 같은 덕목을 나타내는 인물들에 둘러싸인 채 호화로운 예복 차림으로 왕좌에 앉아 있는 고귀한 통치자를 보게 된다. 
001 So in the case of good government we see the dignified ruler dressed in rich robes and sitting on his throne, surrounded by figures representing the virtues of Courage, Justice, Magnanimity, Peace, Prudence, and Temperance.  

011 그 밑에는 한 줄로 늘어선 시민들 사이로 기다란 끈이 이어지는데, 그 끝이 통치자의 손목에 묶여 있다. 그것은 통치자와 인민의 조화로운 결합을 상징한다.
001 Beneath him stand a line of citizens encircled by a long rope the ends of which are tied to the ruler's wrist, symbolizing the harmonious binding together of ruler and people.   

people 은 인민의 번역이 좋다. 사람들, 국민, 민중이라고 할 것도 아니다.

011 오른쪽으로 눈길을 돌리면 먼저 도시에서, 다음으로 시골에서 좋은 정부가 미치는 효과에 대한 로렌체티의 묘사를 볼 수 있다.
001 As we turn to the right we see Lorenzetti's portrayal of the effects of good government first in the city and then in the countryside.  

011 도시는 질서정연하고 부유하다. 장인들이 열심히 일하고, 상인들이 물건을 사고팔며, 귀족들이 화려하게 장식된 말을 타고 가는 모습이 보인다. 한 곳에서는 한 무리의 춤추는 사람들이 손을 잡은 채 원을 그리고 있다.
001 The city is ordered and wealthy: we see artisans plying their trades, merchants buying and selling goods, nobles riding gaily decorated horses; in one place a group of dancers join hands in a circle.  

영어판에는 마침표가 아닌 콜론으로 되어있다. 콜론은 그 다음에 콜론을 보충하는 설명이 있다. 그 설명이 쉼표로 있다가 마침표가 있으면 콜론에 관한 보충 설명이 끝난다. 세미콜론은 세미콜론의 앞의 문장과 내용이 연결은 되는데 마침표로 끝내기 어중간할 때 세미콜론을 쓴다.

"장인들이 ··· 보인다."까지가 도시에 대한 보충 설명 첫번째이고, 그 다음에 "한 곳에서는 ··· 있다."까지가 도시의 모습이다.

011 성문 너머에서는 잘 차려입은 한 여인이 사냥하러 나가고, 길가에서는 포동포동한 새들백 돼지가 시장으로 몰고 간다. 들판에서는 농부들이 땅을 갈고 추수한다. 
002 Beyond the city gate a well-dressed lady rides out to hunt, passing on the way a plump saddleback pig being driven in to market; in the countryside itself peasants till the earth and gather in the harvest.  

한국어판은 마침표이지만 원문은 세미콜론이다. 시골에 대한 내용이 두 개이다.
잘 차려입은 한 여인이 사냥하러 다닌다. 로렌체티의 그림의 특징적인 점. 남녀간의 차별이 없는 모습을 표현하고 있는 점이다. 정확하게 말하면 세 군데가 나온다. 하나는 도시 city가 있고, city gate 너머가 있고, countryside가 있다. 

012 주의깊지 못한 관람객이 이 프레스코화의 메시지를 파악하지 못하는 경우를 상정해서, 안전을 나타내는 날개 달린 인물이 높이 내걸고 있는 깃발에 다음과 같은 말이 적혀 있다. 
002 In case any careless viewer should fail to grasp the fresco's message, it is spelt out in a banner held aloft by a winged figure representing Security: 

012 이 공동체가 여전히 이 주권자를 유지하는 한, 모든 사람이 두려움 없이 자유롭게 여행할 수 있으며, 각자는 땅을 갈고 씨를 뿌릴 수 있다. 그녀가 악한 자로부터 모든 힘을 빼앗았기 때문이다. 
002 Without fear every man may travel freely and each may till and sow, so long as this commune still maintains this lady sovereign, for she has stripped the wicked of all power. 

공동체가 commune이라는 말로 표현되어 있다. 공동체라는 단어를 선택한 것에 이의는 없으나 코뮌이라고 해서 적당할 것 같다. 
well-dressed lady는 여성 주권자, 말을 타고 사냥하러 나가는 여인이 주권자라는 것을 표현하고 있다. 왜 여성을 그려넣었는지는 해석의 여지가 있다.
