재즈의 숲길에서

이른바 명반, 그것도 재즈의 명반이란 무엇인가? 그것은 작품인가, 특별한 복제품에 지나지 않는것인가? 그로부터 받게되는 감동의 본질은 과연 무엇일까? 아우라가 있을수도 있을까? 무엇보다 이 인터넷 시대에도그같은 질문이 가당키나 할까? 결국 또 다른 등급 매기기, 딜레랑트들의 자기만족에 불과한 것이지나 않을까? 키치적 열망까지 감지되는데? 

출판사측으로부터 출간 제의를 받았을 때, 논리적 순서로 보자면 나는 저 같은 질문을 스스로에게 던졌어야 했다. 그러나 실은 그렇지 못했다. 

30여 년간 모아온 음반은 내게 가시화된 내면이었고, 세상과 연결시켜 주는 미디어였고, (안쓰럽게도) 나를 차별화해 주는 징표였다. 나는 예술의 허울을 쓴 물성(物性)의 노예였을지도 모른다. 또 현실적으로는 그런 거창한 질문보다 내가 감히 '명반 몇 선(選)' 식의 규격화를 성실히 수행할 수 있을까, 라는 고민이 없지 않았다. 십수 년 전에 쓴 책 《재즈 재즈》(황금가지, 1996)를 총론으로 간주하고 그에 대한 각론을 쓰고 싶은 마음이 컸다, 라고 생각해 두자. 

실은, 솔직히 표현하자면 출판사의 제안을 '덥석 삼켰다'고 해야 할 것이다. 그것은 무엇보다 그 물건들을 모으고 보존해왔던 시간에 대한 내 나름의 답안 같은 것이라 할 수 있겠다 싶은, 내면에 도사리고 있던 바람을 이룰 수 있겠다 싶은 느낌 때문이었을 것이다. 무엇보다도 나 자신을 돌아볼, 또는 만날 수 있는 확실한 통로 같았기 때문이다. 

레코드점에서 음반 고를 때 나는 정성을다해 신중했다. 얇은 주머니 사정에 하나도 허투루 집에 들고온 것은 없었댜 이제 그 컬렉션을 부려놓을 때가. 

안나푸르나 출판사와 합의한 서술조건은 레코드의 음반설명서, 관련 인터넷과 도서 자료 등을 뒤져 나온 정보, 무엇보다 개인적으로 쌓이게 된 인연 따위를 요령 있게 정리하는데에 적당한 틀이라는느낌이 질어 갔다. 한가지 더, 《정오의 목욕》으로 맺어진 인연의 힘일 것이다. 책은 나와 안나푸르나의 합작품이라는 표현이 타당하다. 

내가 갖고 있던 재즈 음반과 안나푸르나가 추천해 준 재즈 명반 리스트를 합쳐 아이템을 만들었다. 안나푸르나가 제시한 명반 리스트에 대해 새삼 '공부'해 나가면서 그 음반들의 의미를 곱씹어보았다. 그들에 대한 데이터를 구하고 확인하며 풍성한 아카이브를 일구어 낼 수 있었다. 인터넷 상에 산재한 정보를 취사선택하는 것도 내 나름의 즐거움이었다. 

애초 고정화된 텍스트란 없는 예술인 재즈. 그에 관한 담론이란 공식적, 비공식적인 '풍문'의 총합 아닐까. 책을 써 나가면서도 웹을 뒤졌고, 그러다 보니 예기치 않게 독일발 인터넷 신문에서 흥미로운 재즈 특집을 건져 올릴 수 있었다. '재즈와 영화'라는 부록 같은 글을 그래서 덧붙일 수 있었다. 

객관적 설명 뒤에 곁다리 낀 나의 주관은 완전히 하나의 사족임을 안다. 명반 옆에 들어붙은, 수많은 가능성 가운데 하나일 뿐. 그러나 부디 저 곤혹스러운 팩트를 즐기시길. 앨범 한 장당 인터넷상의 도메인 서너 개를 참고했는데, 서술이 들쑥날쑥하다는 느낌이 온다면 쇄도하는 정보량을 제대로 감당하지 못한 나의 무능함 때문이려니 하고 눙쳐 주길 바랄 뿐이다.
