032 이러한 물음들을 제기하고 몇 가지 답을 제시할 때, 정치철학자들은 어떤 신비롭고 난해한 지식에 호소하지 않는다(또는 호소할 필요가 없다). 
014 In raising these questions, and suggesting some answers, political philosophers are not (or needn't be) appealing to any esoteric form of knowledge. 

exoteric은 누구나 알 수 있게 공적인 영역에 매뉴얼처럼 나와있는 것을 말한다.
esoteric은 특정한 비밀결사단체 이런데서 비밀스럽게 전해지는 것을 말한다. 흔히 비의적인 이라고 번역하는데 신비롭고 난해한 이라고 번역해도 좋다.

032 그들은 독자가 자신의 정치적 가치들을 돌아보도록 촉구하고 자신이 가장 큰 관심을 기울이는 것이 최종적 분석에서 어떠한 것들로 드러나는지 이해하도록 권한다. 
014 They are inviting their readers to reflect on their own political values, and to see which ones they care about most in the final analysis. 

032 그 과정에서 그들은 몇 가지 새로운 정보를 덧붙일 수 있다. 
014 Along the way they may add in some new pieces of information.  

 

032 예를 들어 경제성장의 가치에 대해 살펴볼 때는 물질적 생활 수준이 판이한 사람들이 건강이나 사망률 같은 신체적 지표나, 그들이 스스로의 삶에 어느 정도나 만족하는지와 같은 심리적 지표에 비추어 수치상으로 어떤 차이를 보이는지 살펴보는 것이 의미가 있다.
014 For instance, when contemplating the value of economic growth, it is relevant to see how people whose material living standards are very different score in terms of physical indicators such as health and mortality, and psychological indicators such as how satisfied they feel with their lives. 

032 그러므로 정치철학자들은 사회과학이나 정치학에 관해 충분히 파악해둘 필요가 있다.
014 Political philosophers therefore need to have a good grasp of social and political science.

015 In this respect political philosophers today can build on more solid empirical foundations by virtue of the huge expansion of the social sciences in the 20th century. 

032 그러나 그들이 다루어야 할 과제의 본질적 특성은 여전히 똑같다.

015 They take what we know about human societies, and the ways in which they are governed, and then they ask what the best form of government would be, in the light of aims and values that they believe their audience will share.
