033 바로 앞의 몇 단락에서 내가 염두에 둔 것[하고자 했던 것]은 보통사람들로서는 접근할 수 없는 특별한 종류의 진리에 호소하지 않고서도 정치철학이 어떻게 정치에 관한 우리의 사고방식을 조명할 수 있는지 보여주는 것이었다. 
015 What I have tried to do in the last few paragraphs is to show how political philosophy can illuminate the way we think about politics without making claims to a special kind of truth that is inaccessible to the ordinary person. 

033 여기에는 관련된 쟁점이 있다. 바로 정치철학이 우리에게 제공하는 종류의 진리는 어느 정도나 보편적인 진리, 즉 모든 사회와 역사의 모든 시기에 적용되는 진리인가 하는 것이다. 
015 There is a related issue here, which is how far the kind of truth political philosophy gives us is universal truth - truth that applies to all societies and in all periods of history. 

 

033 아니면 우리가 바랄 수 있는 최선의 것은 국부적인[국지적인, 지엽적인] 앎, 즉 오늘날 우리가 살아가는 특정 종류의 사회에만 관련되는 앎인가? 
015 Or is the best we can hope for local knowledge, knowledge that is relevant only to the particular kind of society we live in today? 

universal truth와 local knowledge가 대비되어 있다.

033 이에 대해서 내가 제시하려는 답은 정치철학의 의제도 사회나 정부가 변함에 따라 변한다는 것이다. 비록 몇몇 요소는[항목들은] 우리가 역사로부터 아는 한[기록된 것을 거슬러 보고 있는 한] 예전부터 변함이 없는 채로이지만 말이다. 
015 The answer I want to give is that the agenda of political philosophy changes as society and government change, although some items have stayed on it as far back as our records go. 

items은 agenda의 하위로 사용되어서 "항목"이라고 번역해도 좋을 것이다.
it은 the agenda of political philosophy를 받았다.

033 이런 영원한 물음들 중에는 다음 장에서 다루게 될 정치나 정치권력에 관한 기본적인 물음들이 포함된다[있다].  
015 Among these perennial questions are basic questions about politics and political authority that I shall be addressing in the next chapter. 

 

033 무엇보다도 먼저 우리는 왜 정치를 필요로 하는가? 누군가는 타인에게 자기 의지에 반해 뭔가를 하도록 강제할 수 있는 권리를 지니는가?[누군가가 도대체 어떤 권리를 가지고 있기에 다른 사람에게 의지에 반해서 어떤 행동을 하게 하는가?] 
015 Why do we need politics in the first place? What right has anybody to force another person to do something against their will? 

 

034 왜 나는 법이 내 마음에 들지 않을 때도 그 법에 복종해야 하는가?
015 Why should I obey the law when it does not suit me to?

 

034 그러나 다른 경우들에서는[그런데 앞서와는 다른 경우에는] 그것이 물음이든 답이든[물음이나 답이] 시간이 지남에 따라 변해왔으며, 그래서 우리는 어째서 그리되었는지 알아볼 필요가 있다.
015 But in other cases, either the questions, or the answers, or both, have changed over time, and we need to see why this is so.
