45 홉스가 이런 비관주의적 결론에 도달한 것은 사람들이 본성상 이기적이거나 탐욕스러우며, 따라서 정치권력에 의해 제약받지 않으면 자신들을 위해 가능한 한 더 많이 움켜쥐려고 할 것이라는 그의 믿음 때문이라고 자주 언급되었다.  
22 It is sometimes said that Hobbes reaches this pessimistic conclusion because of a belief that people are naturally selfish or greedy, and will therefore try to grab as much for themselves as they can when unrestrained by political authority. 

 

45 그러나 이것은 홉스의 진정한 논점을 놓치고 있다. 그 논점은 신뢰가 부재할 때는 사람들 사이의 협조가 불가능하며, 그 신뢰는 법을 강제할 수 있는 상위의 힘이 없는 곳에서는 훼손되리라는 것이다.  
22 But this misses Hobbes's real point, which is that cooperation between people is impossible in the absence of trust, and that trust will be lacking where there is no superior power to enforce the law. 

홉스의 진정한 논점은 "신뢰"이다. 
가령 로버트 퍼트넘의 《사회적 자본과 민주주의》를 보면 신뢰가 없는 곳에서는 민주주의가 작동하지 않는다는 것들을 이탈리아 남부지역을 연구하여 결과를 내놓았다. 그런 것을 보면 신뢰라고 하는 것이 정치체제를 유지하는데 있어서 가장 밑바탕에 놓여있는 것이다. 

45 홉스가 '자연 상태'에 결여되어 있다고 묘사하는 것들은 무엇보다도 우선 많은 사람에게 남들도 스스로의 역할을 다하리라고 기대하면서 함께 일할 것을 요구하는 것들이며, 정치권력이 부재할 때[없다면] 그러한 기대를 품는 것은 안전하지 않다. 
22 Those things that Hobbes describes as missing in the 'natural condition' are above all things that require numbers of people to work together in the expectation that others will do their part, and in the absence of political authority it is not safe to have any such expectation. 

46 만약 내가 누군가와 계약을 체결할 때[약속을 한다면] 그 계약[약속]을 강제할 법이 없다면, 왜 내가 그 사람이 그 계약[약속]을 지키리라고 기대해야 하는가?  
22 If I make an agreement with someone, why should I expect him to keep it, if there is no law to enforce the agreement?   

46 그리고 그가 계약을 지킬 마음이 있다 하더라도, 그는 나에 대해 똑같은 우려를 품으면서 그렇게 신뢰하는 것은 너무 위험하다고 판단할 수도 있다.  
22 And even if he is inclined to keep the agreement, he may wonder the same about me, and decide that it is too risky to do so.  

 

46 이러한 상황에서 홉스는 늘 최악의 사태를 상정하며 죽음의 위협에 맞서 자신을 보호할 수 있는 방책을 강구하는 것만이 가장 현명한[사려깊은] 태도라고 주장한다.  
22 In this situation, Hobbes argues, it is only prudent to assume the worst, and take every step you can to secure yourself against the threat of death;  

 

46 그리고 그것을 실행하는 방법은 다른 사람과 비교하여 가능한 한 더 많은 힘을 모으는 것이다.  
22 and the way to do that, in turn, is to amass as much power relative to other people as you can.  

 

46 기본적으로 정치권력[정치적 권위]이 없는 삶을 '만인의 만인에 대한 영원한 전쟁'으로 만드는 것은 불신으로부터 생기는, 다른 이들에 대한 두려움이다. 
23 At base it is fear of others, born of mistrust, that turns life without political authority into 'a perpetual warre of every man against his neighbour'.
